About Seagull Vision Partners
Seagull Vision Partners, LLC is a business consultancy that partners with business owners and leadership teams guiding them in identifying their strategic goals, with the goal of scaling their business and improving their bottom line.
WHY SEAGULL VISION
So, what’s with the Seagull analogy and where did that come from…
It all started over a decade ago, when Seagull Vision Partners Founder & President was serving as a board member for a regional company. During David’s tenure on the board, David was quickly nicknamed “Seagull”, as he was recognized for “flying in quarterly, and with a keen eye assessing the company’s challenges, and making constructive recommendations on things that the leadership team often did not see.”
A business guide can be compared to a seagull soaring high above the shoreline. Like the seagull, the guide has a broader vantage point—able to see patterns, opportunities, and obstacles that those on the ground often miss. With sharp insight and an elevated perspective, the guide helps individuals and teams navigate challenges, make clearer decisions, and spot possibilities hidden from their everyday view. This analogy highlights the guide’s role in offering clarity, wisdom, and strategic vision that lifts others toward greater success.

COACH VS. GUIDE
There is a big difference between being a Coach and a Guide.
In general, a coach primarily helps a person achieve their own defined goals by asking questions, providing tools, and holding them accountable, while a guide leads someone by providing direct directions, information, and a supportive presence on a journey or towards a specific destination or wisdom.
The key difference lies in the coach empowering self-discovery and internal answers versus the guide providing external direction and support for a given path.
Coach
- Focus: Helping individuals discover their own answers and achieve personal or professional goals.
- Method: Uses powerful questions, tools, and strategies to encourage self-awareness and define steps towards goals.
- Role: An expert in the process of goal attainment, who facilitates the client finding their own solutions.
- Relationship: Often a non-directive, formal, and paid relationship with a significant time commitment.
- Example: Helping an athlete identify their weaknesses and strategies to improve, or assisting a professional in preparing for a promotion.
Guide
- Focus: Leading a person through a journey, whether physical, intellectual, or spiritual.
- Method: Accompanies the traveler, provides directions, information, and the tools to navigate the path.
- Role: To lead by walking alongside, giving clear instructions, and helping to discover inherent wisdom or navigate specific sites.
- Relationship: A supportive role, sometimes acting as a companion on an “epic adventure” or a more formal professional tour guide.
- Example: Leading a group of tourists through a historical site or providing directions on a mountain climb.
Someone asked me last week what the difference is between a coach and a guide. Fair question. We use the word “guide” because “coach” means too many things now. There are wellness coaches, life coaches, executive coaches, leadership coaches, business coaches, career coaches, etc. Some of them ask questions and let you figure it out. Some of them tell you what to do. Some of them just sit there and nod. A guide does three things: (1) They coach. They ask hard questions that make you think differently about your business. (2) They consult. They bring their own experience and tell you what they’ve seen work and what doesn’t. (3) They facilitate. They run sessions with your leadership team and help them make decisions they’ve been avoiding. Most coaches do one of those things really well. Guides do all three. Here’s an example. A client comes to a Guide and says their leadership team isn’t aligned because they’re missing goals and nobody’s taking ownership. A pure coach would ask them questions until they figure out the problem themselves. A pure consultant would tell them exactly what to do and hand them a plan. A pure facilitator would run a meeting and help them hash it out. Guides do all three. We ask them what they think the real problem is. We share what we’ve seen with other clients in similar situations. We run a session with their team and help them agree on what needs to change. That’s what makes someone a guide instead of a coach or consultant. We meet clients where they are and bring whatever they need in that moment. Not everyone can do that. But if you’ve been a CEO or an executive, you probably already know how. You just need the tools and the training to do it consistently.
